When a customer calls in winter about the switchboard you quoted in spring, open the breakdown. It shows the board, the circuits, the hours and the profit on each line.
It is on the quote page as Your private breakdown (PDF), and it never appears in the customer's link, PDF or email.
What a good electrical quote needs
- Every point, light and fitting on its own line with a quantity, so they can see six power points are six power points.
- Who supplies the fittings, and the type where it matters: IC-4 rated downlights, photoelectric smoke alarms, the RCBO count on the board.
- Board work spelled out: circuits added, RCBOs, labelling, and what happens if you open up an old board and find a problem.
- Access: single or double storey, how tight the roof space is, and any wall you'll be chasing.
- A line that the job is tested and certified on completion, and your electrical licence number.
- What's not included: patching and painting after cable runs is the classic.
- How long the price holds and the deposit you want before you order a board or a charger.
For a step-by-step guide, read how to quote an electrical job.
On every electrical quote
- Licence
- Include on the quote: Electrical contractor licence number.
- Electrical work is licensed work in every state and territory, so your licence number belongs on the quote. Customers check it, and it's the first thing an insurer asks for.
- Compliance
- In NSW the electrician who tests the work lodges a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) no later than seven days after the test.
- In Victoria a Certificate of Electrical Safety is needed for both prescribed work (switchboards, consumer mains, solar) and non-prescribed work like lights, power points, air con and hot water.
- Other states have their own certificate. If you charge for lodging it, the Compliance certificate lodgement line is one of your items.
- GST
- If you are registered for GST, Karven adds 10% once and shows one total inc GST. If you are not registered, there is no GST line. More in GST on quotes.
- Deposit
- A handful of points rarely needs a deposit. A switchboard upgrade or an EV charger does: you're buying the gear before you start. Set your deposit % once and it's on every quote; card deposits land through Stripe, or your bank and PayID details show after they accept.
- Example: the sample job above is $1,689.60 inc GST, so the 10% deposit is $168.96.
- Variations
- Open up the wall and find old rubber-insulated cable? Stop, add a variation on the accepted quote with what you found and the price, and the customer signs it on the same link before you keep going.

Following up and getting the deposit
Electrical quotes go quiet when the customer is getting two other prices. Karven tells you when Sam hasn't opened it after 3 days and has the nudge written; you tap Send or skip it. A switchboard quote that's been opened three times is worth a phone call, and Today shows you which one that is.
- Karven writes them and you tap Send
- Or turn on Send automatically
- Deposits by card, bank transfer or PayID

Following up on your quote from Ridgeline ElectricalMessage
Hi Sam, Just checking in on the $1,689.60 quote I sent through. Happy to talk it over or change anything that doesn't suit. Cheers, Jordan Ridgeline Electrical
This is the whole message. Under it they get a button to open their quote, then your phone number.
The follow-up Karven writes for you. Nothing goes until you tap Send.
How electricians usually price a job
- New points, lights and fans are usually priced per item, so the customer can drop from eight downlights to six without a new quote.
- Fault-finding is a call-out plus time. You can't price a fault you haven't found, so say it's time based up front.
- Switchboard upgrades and EV chargers suit a fixed price with clear inclusions, because the customer is comparing totals.
- After-hours work carries a higher rate. Put it on the quote instead of springing it on them at the door.

Electrical questions
Common questions
Should I quote electrical work per point or by the hour?
Per point for new points, lights and fans: the customer sees each one and can change the number. Fault-finding is better as a call-out plus an hourly rate, because you can't price a fault you haven't found yet.
How do I quote smoke alarm upgrades?
One line per alarm with the type (240V interconnected or 10-year lithium wireless) and the quantity. Both types are already in Karven's electrical items with a starting cost.
Can the customer choose their downlights?
Yes. Put the standard and premium downlights in as a pick-one choice. They pick on their phone and the total updates before they accept.
Can I quote an EV charger and a board upgrade together?
Yes, as two sections on one quote. Make the charger optional if they haven't decided, so they can tick it when they accept.
Where does my licence number go?
On the quote itself, where the customer can check it against the register. In Karven, add it to your terms in Business details once and it's on every quote, the link and the PDF alike.
Can I see how I priced an electrical quote months later?
Yes. Open the quote and download Your private breakdown (PDF). It is never sent to the customer.
