What a good entry doors quote needs

  • Door size, material and style, and whether it's hinged or pivot.
  • Jambs, sidelights and glazing, with the glass type.
  • Hardware: hinges or pivot kit, handle, lock, multipoint lock, closer.
  • Removing the old door and making good around the frame.
  • Delivery and install time.
  • Finish: factory finished, stained or painted, and who does it.
  • Lead time for made-to-order doors, and that they can't be cancelled once ordered.

On every entry doors quote

Licence
Include on the quote: Contractor licence number (where your state requires one).
Whether you need a licence depends on your state and what the job is worth. In NSW you need a contractor licence and a written contract for residential building work over $5,000 inc GST. In Queensland a QBCC licence is needed for building work valued over $3,300. Other states set their own rules, so check your regulator before you quote.
Compliance
If the job changes the opening or the frame, it may be building work in your state. In NSW, residential building work over $5,000 inc GST needs a written contract.
Deposits on home building work are capped by state law: 10% in NSW; in Victoria 10% under $20,000 and 5% at $20,000 or more; and in WA builders can't ask for more than 6.5% on contracts from $7,500 to $500,000.
GST
If you are registered for GST, Karven adds 10% once and shows one total inc GST. If you are not registered, there is no GST line. More in GST on quotes.
Deposit
A custom door is made to order, so take a deposit before you place the order. Set your % once and it's on every quote; card through Stripe, or your bank and PayID details after they accept.

  • How do I quote a pivot door?

    List the door, the pivot kit, the jambs and the install time separately. Pivot doors take longer to hang and adjust, so make sure the labour shows it.

  • Can the customer pick their handle or lock?

    Yes. Put the options on as a pick-one choice, for example a standard lock and barrel or a multipoint lock, and the customer picks when they accept.

  • Should glazing be priced per square metre?

    Usually. Sidelights and glass panels vary in size, so a rate per square metre keeps it fair. The glazing line in Karven is set up per square metre.

  • Can I quote cladding around the door too?

    Yes. Cladding boards, backing sheets and cladding labour are their own section, so the customer sees what the surround costs on its own.
