What a good plumbing & gas quote needs
- The fixture or hot water unit by type and size, and whether you or the customer supplies it.
- Like-for-like or a changeover: moving the unit, gas to heat pump or a new line all change the price, so say which.
- Compliance parts listed, not hidden: tempering valve, isolation valve, and the compliance certificate.
- Access allowances: under the house, in the roof, behind a vanity that has to come out.
- Removal and disposal of the old unit or fixtures.
- For drains: what the price covers (jetter, camera) and what happens if you find a broken pipe.
- Your licence number, and your after-hours rate if the job might run late.

On every plumbing & gas quote
- Licence
- Include on the quote: Plumbing and gasfitting licence number.
- Plumbing and gasfitting are licensed in every state and territory. In Queensland, for example, plumbing, drainage and gasfitting need a licence whatever the job is worth. Put your licence number on the quote.
- Compliance
- Regulated plumbing and gas work needs a compliance certificate in most states. List it as a line (it's in your items) so it never looks like an add-on.
- If the hot water unit is electric or a heat pump, the electrical side needs a licensed electrician and that state's electrical certificate.
- GST
- If you are registered for GST, Karven adds 10% once and shows one total inc GST. If you are not registered, there is no GST line. More in GST on quotes.
- Deposit
- Leaking taps and blocked drains don't need a deposit. A hot water unit or a bathroom fit-off does, because you're buying the unit. Set your deposit % once; they pay by card when they accept, or see your bank and PayID details.
- Example: the sample job above is $1,650.00 inc GST, so the 10% deposit is $165.00.
- Variations
- Cracked pipe behind the old unit, or the gas line won't take a continuous flow? Add a variation on the accepted quote with the fix and the price. They approve and sign it on the link before you go further.

How plumbers usually price a job
- Fixture swaps and hot water replacements are usually a fixed price, supplied and installed.
- Blocked drains and leaks are a call-out plus time, with a camera inspection as its own line.
- Gas work is commonly priced per appliance connection, plus new pipe by the metre.
- Hot water is a decision the customer makes in a hurry when the old one dies. Two or three options side by side answers the first question they'll ask.

Common questions
How do I quote a hot water replacement?
Price the unit, the install labour and the compliance parts (tempering valve, isolation valve, certificate) as separate lines, then add removal of the old unit. If they're choosing between storage and continuous flow, set them up as a pick-one choice.
Should a blocked drain quote be a fixed price?
Usually not. Quote the call-out and the first period of clearing, then your hourly rate. Say plainly what happens if the camera finds a broken pipe that needs digging up.
Can I add a camera inspection as an extra?
Yes. Mark the CCTV drain camera line as optional. It only counts in the total if the customer ticks it when they accept.
Does Karven know my after-hours rate?
Yes. Put in your hourly rate when you set up and the after-hours line is filled at one and a half times it. Change either one any time.
Can I quote gas fitting on the same quote as plumbing?
Yes. Gas fitting is its own section in the plumbing items: cooktop and oven connections, new bayonets, extra pipe by the metre and leak find and repair.
