When a neighbour wants the same fence on their side, the breakdown shows the panels, posts, removal and your profit, so the second quote takes minutes.

It is on the quote page as Your private breakdown (PDF), and it never appears in the customer's link, PDF or email.

What a good fencing quote needs

  • Fence type, height and total run in metres, plus the panel or paling style.
  • Posts and footings: how many, how deep, and what happens if you hit rock.
  • Gates on their own lines with width, hardware and whether they self-close.
  • Removing and carting away the old fence, and how asbestos sheeting is handled if it's there.
  • Site conditions: slope, plinths or sleepers under the fence, hand-carrying materials in.
  • For a dividing fence, whose names are on the quote and how the cost is split.

For a step-by-step guide, read how to quote a fencing job.

On every fencing quote

Licence
Include on the quote: Contractor licence number (where your state requires one).
Whether you need a licence depends on your state and what the job is worth. In NSW you need a contractor licence and a written contract for residential building work over $5,000 inc GST. In Queensland a QBCC licence is needed for building work valued over $3,300. Other states set their own rules, so check your regulator before you quote.
Compliance
An old fibro fence may be asbestos. Under the model work health and safety laws, removing more than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos needs a licensed removalist; check your state regulator.
Pool fences have their own barrier rules. Say on the quote which rules you're building to.
Deposits on home building work are capped by state law: 10% in NSW; in Victoria 10% under $20,000 and 5% at $20,000 or more; and in WA builders can't ask for more than 6.5% on contracts from $7,500 to $500,000.
GST
If you are registered for GST, Karven adds 10% once and shows one total inc GST. If you are not registered, there is no GST line. More in GST on quotes.
Deposit
Sheets, posts and gates get ordered once they say yes, so a deposit is normal. Set your % once (within your state's cap for home building work) and they pay by card when they accept, or with your bank and PayID details.
Example: the sample job above is $1,818.96 inc GST, so the 10% deposit is $181.90.
Variations
Hit rock on post four? The hard ground line is already on the quote as an allowance. For anything else, add a variation on the accepted quote with the price and the customer signs it on the link.

How fencers usually price a job

  • Fences are priced per lineal metre supplied and installed, with gates each.
  • Slope, height upgrades and plinths go on per metre over the base rate.
  • Rock and hard ground are an allowance per post, because you can't see them until you dig.
  • Old fence removal is per metre, with tip fees per load.

Fencing questions

Common questions

  • How do I work out the number of fence posts?

Divide the run by your post spacing, round up and add one for the end post. Karven's fence calculator does it when you enter the length, and adds the footings to match.

  • How do I quote a dividing fence between neighbours?

Quote the whole job and note how the cost is split between the owners. Some fencers send one quote to both. The rules for dividing fences differ by state.

  • Should gates be on the same line as the fence?

No. Each gate on its own line with its width and hardware. It's easier to read and easier to add or drop a gate.

  • What if I hit rock digging post holes?

Add a hard ground line per post and say it only applies if you hit it. The customer knows the risk up front and there's no argument later.

  • Can the customer pick Colorbond or timber?

Yes. Put both on as a pick-one choice and they choose on their phone. The total updates before they accept.

  • Can I see how I priced a fencing quote months later?

Yes. Open the quote and download Your private breakdown (PDF). It is never sent to the customer.

  • What does Karven cost for fencers?

It is free for 21 days with no card needed. Then Starter is $29/mo inc GST with unlimited quotes. Card deposits cost Stripe's fee plus 0.5% to Karven.
