What your customer sees (and what only you see)
The Customer sees setting: full breakdown, section totals or total only. Your own copy always keeps every row, cost and profit.
Updated 2026-10-23
Some customers want every line. Some start haggling the second they see one. Karven lets you pick how much of the price they see, quote by quote, without ever losing the detail on your side.
The three settings
When you tap Preview & send, the send screen has a Customer sees setting with three choices:
- Full breakdown. Every line with its quantity and price ("6 × $180.00 = $1,080.00").
- Section totals. What each part of the job covers and what it costs. No line-by-line.
- Total only. One number, plus the descriptions of the work. A part with no description lists what it includes by name ("6 × LED downlight"), without prices.
Whichever you pick, the customer still sees what's included. Section descriptions, your Saved wording (warranty, terms, about us), photos and the note for the customer show in every mode. Only the money detail changes.
The setting applies to the customer's quote page and their PDF. If you resend a quote, you can change it then too.
Set your default
Most tradies quote the same way every time. Set your usual choice once in Settings → Quote defaults → What customers see. It saves as soon as you pick. New quotes start with it, and you can still change it on any single quote at send time.
What only you see
Your copy of the quote never hides anything, whatever the customer sees. On the quote page in Karven and on your own PDF download you keep:
- every row, with qty and rate
- your cost and markup on each row
- your profit
- your private note
Your PDF also gets an extra page marked INTERNAL - your copy with the full cost sheet: qty, rate, cost, markup, profit and the private note. That page is never on the customer's PDF or their quote page.
The two notes
The simple editor has two note boxes, and they go to different places:
- Notes appear at the bottom of the customer's PDF and on their quote page. Use them for site access, lead times, exclusions.
- Private note is only for you. It stays on your copy. Use it for the supplier, who referred them, what they said on the phone.
Which one to pick
- Full breakdown suits commercial work and customers who've asked for the detail.
- Section totals is a good middle ground for most residential jobs. They see what they're paying for each part without a line to pick at.
- Total only suits small jobs and customers who just want a number.
If you're using optional extras or pick-one choices, those still show with their prices in every mode, because the customer needs to see what they're choosing. See optional extras.
Related: your cost and your private profit.
